Understanding Identity and Life Transitions
Identity isn’t static. It shifts as we move through life—new jobs, new relationships, parenthood, loss, aging, retirement. Sometimes these changes are chosen; sometimes they happen to us. Either way, they can shake our sense of who we are and what we’re doing with our lives.
These transitions aren’t weaknesses. They’re part of being human.
Together, we’ll explore:
- What this transition means for your sense of identity and purpose
- The gap between who you were, who you are now, and who you’re becoming
- What’s been lost in the transition and what’s being gained
- The beliefs or expectations making the transition harder than it needs to be
This isn’t about rushing through change or forcing clarity before you’re ready. It’s about creating space to sit with the uncertainty, understand what’s underneath, and find your way forward.

When Therapy for Life Transitions is Particularly Helpful
This work is especially relevant when:
Multiple Changes at Once
You’re not dealing with one transition—it’s a career change AND becoming a parent AND moving to a new city. The compound effect leaves you questioning everything.
Identity Built on What's Gone
Your identity was wrapped up in something that’s no longer there—a job, a relationship, a role—and you’re not sure who you are without it.
Stuck Between Past and Future
You know you can’t go back, but you’re not ready to move forward. You’re in the gap, and it’s uncomfortable. Therapy helps you navigate that space.
External Change, Internal Question
The external transition (new job, new baby, new city) happened, but internally you’re still figuring out what it means for who you are and what you want.
What to Expect in Therapy
First Session
Together, we’ll explore what’s shifting for you, what the transition has brought up, and what you’re hoping will become clearer. This isn’t about having answers yet—it’s about starting to understand the questions.
Ongoing Work
We’ll work to understand what this transition means for your identity, explore the tension between who you were and who you’re becoming, and create space for grief, uncertainty, and possibility. You’ll experiment with new ways of seeing yourself and making decisions.
Your Pace
Some people come weekly, others every other week. We’ll find a rhythm that works for where you are in the transition. There’s no rush to have it all figured out.
Individual Sessions When Needed
Clarity doesn’t always come quickly. We’ll work on tolerating uncertainty, exploring what matters to you, and making small moves forward even when the big picture isn’t clear yet.
My Approach to Identity and Transition Work
I don’t believe transitions need to be rushed or that you should have clarity before you’re ready. Often, the discomfort of not knowing is where the most important work happens.
Together, we’ll work to understand what’s underneath the uncertainty, explore what this transition means for your sense of self, and build space for both grief and possibility. This includes challenging the beliefs that make transitions harder—perfectionism, timelines that don’t fit, or expectations about who you “should” be at this stage.
I work with people navigating all kinds of transitions—career changes, parenthood, relationship shifts, loss, aging, and life stage questions. Whether your transition was chosen or happened to you, you’re welcome here.
